Choosing a Fronius system
Fronius is Austrian, has been making inverters since 1992, and has a long-standing Australian service operation. That last point is why we still fit them: warranty support you can actually reach matters more in year seven than efficiency figures matter in year one.
Primo, Symo and what the GEN24 name means
The Primo GEN24 is single-phase, 3.0 to 10.0 kW, two MPPTs. The Symo GEN24 is the three-phase equivalent. The Plus suffix is the one that matters at quoting time: a Plus unit is battery-ready, a non-Plus is not. If there is any chance of adding storage later, the Plus is worth the difference now — retrofitting means replacing the inverter.
Fronius's own battery, the Reserva, arrived recently in an AUS/NZ version at 3.15 kWh per module. It pairs natively with GEN24 Plus, which removes the compatibility questions that come with mixing brands.
The feature people underuse
GEN24 Plus units include emergency power from a dedicated socket without a battery attached — PV Point. In a blackout, with sun on the roof, you get a limited supply for a fridge or a phone charger. It is not whole-home backup and should not be sold as such, but it is included and most owners never learn it is there.
Where Fronius is not the answer
- They are rarely the cheapest. On a straightforward roof where budget is the deciding factor, GoodWe or Sungrow deliver similar generation for less.
- The units are physically larger and heavier than most competitors, which occasionally matters in a tight garage or on a narrow wall.
- Fronius inverters are actively cooled. They are not loud, but they are not silent either — worth knowing before mounting one on a bedroom wall.
Wattpilot. Fronius also make an EV charger that talks to the inverter and charges from surplus solar rather than the grid. If you have a Fronius inverter and an EV, keeping both in one ecosystem removes a layer of integration that otherwise needs a separate meter.
