Choosing an Emerald heat pump
Emerald is an Australian heat pump brand, and hot water is usually the second largest item on an Australian power bill after heating and cooling. A heat pump moves heat rather than generating it, which is why it uses substantially less electricity than the conventional electric storage tank it replaces.
All-in-one, and what the E means
Emerald's Pro range is all-in-one: the heat pump sits on top of the tank as a single unit, rather than a split system with a separate outdoor compressor. That makes installation simpler and cheaper where there is room for it, and impossible where there is not — a tank in a tight side passage may need a split system instead.
Every size comes in two versions. The E models include an electric backup element; the plain models do not. The element is a safety net for a cold snap or a run of heavy use, and it costs more to run when it engages. If your household is steady and your hot water demand is predictable, the version without it will cost less over its life.
Sizing an Emerald by household
- 220 L — one to three people, or a household with modest hot water use.
- 270 L — the common choice, three to five people, and the size most replacements land on.
- 320 L — five or more, or a household with a spa bath or two simultaneous showers.
Undersizing is the mistake that produces complaints. A heat pump recovers more slowly than an element, so a tank that is marginal on paper runs out on the day everyone showers in sequence.
Run it on your own solar. The saving is largest when the unit is timed to heat through the middle of the day on your own generation rather than overnight on grid power. Setting that timer is part of our installation, and it is the difference between a good result and a modest one.
Where an Emerald heat pump is not the answer
- If you have gas hot water and cheap gas, the case is weaker and depends on where gas prices go.
- They are not silent. There is a compressor, and it should not sit under a bedroom window.
- In an unheated space in a cold winter, efficiency drops. It still works; it just works harder.
