Choosing a Tesla Powerwall

Powerwall is the battery most people name before they name any other, and the reason is that it does one thing unusually well: it is a complete system rather than a set of parts. Whether that is worth the premium depends on what else is on your roof.

Powerwall 3 is an inverter as well as a battery

This is the point most comparisons miss. Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built into it, so on a new installation you are not buying a battery to add to an inverter — you are buying both. Compared like that the price looks different, and on a new build it is often competitive with a separate hybrid and battery.

On a retrofit the calculation reverses. If you already have a working inverter, you are paying for a second one you do not need. That is where an AC-coupled battery or a different brand usually wins.

What it is genuinely good at

  • Whole-home backup that switches over fast enough that most appliances do not notice.
  • 13.5 kWh usable in a single unit, which suits a household with high evening consumption without stacking modules.
  • Software. The app is the best in the category and updates arrive without an installer visit.

Where it is not the answer

  • Retrofitting to recent solar, for the reason above.
  • Homes wanting to start small and expand — Powerwall comes in one size, where modular systems from Sigenergy, BYD or GoodWe let you add capacity later.
  • Three-phase properties with high loads, where a three-phase hybrid may suit the supply better.

Before you commit. Powerwall needs a clear wall with clearances, and in Victoria batteries cannot be installed inside a habitable room or in some garage locations under AS/NZS 5139. We check the location before quoting, because a battery that cannot be sited legally is the most expensive surprise in the process.
